According to the “all-knowing" Wikipedia, Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1907, when Anna Jarvis held the first Mother's Day at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Her campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. She and another peace activist and suffragette, Julia Ward Howe, had been urging for the creation of a "Mother's Day For Peace" where mothers would ask that their husbands and sons were no longer killed in wars.
In 1908, the U.S. Congress rejected a proposal to make Mother's Day an official holiday, joking that they would also have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day". However, owing to the efforts of Anna Jarvis, by 1911, all U.S. states observed the holiday. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor all mothers.
But to me, all history withstanding, there has always been much more to Mother's Day than a federal holiday. You see, my friends, even though I can’t claim to be the sharpest tool in the shed, I can claim a very good memory. And one that always stands out in my mind as a young child is my mother. And, like most people, the memory which stands out the most about my mother is her passion for the love of her children. I clearly remember lying on the dark blue carpet, watching the Saturday morning cartoons. My brothers decorating the sofa and chairs, waiting for Jerry to clobber Tom over the head with a frying pan… And the sound of something totally drowns out the laughter, it was the most wonderful sound I ever heard—a sound I’d heard many times before, but always the sound filled my heart with joy and a feeling of safety. It was the sound of my mother making breakfast in the kitchen. An egg cracking, something frying, something chopping, the oven door… they were the most beautiful sounds in the world. It was the sound of someone's love and passion—my mother.

Rozier's Mercantile has been serving the community since 1903. Located on the square in downtown Perryville, Rozier's recently had some big renovations made to their building, but that's not the only change they have in store for you. Along with many other recent changes to their building and products, Rozier's has rededicated their entire main floor to women, carrying everything you need to make mom say WOW this Mother's Day. We spoke to Rozier's Manager, Karen Lundy, to get the 411.
573: Tell us about the recent changes at Rozier's.
We started renovations in January. We went down to the original floor which is from around the 1920s. We've had a lot of surprises and minor setbacks, but we're nearly finished now. We stayed open the whole time, only closing down the areas that were being worked, and now we are in the final stages and are completely open. We have a little bit more to move, and all the departments were kind of flipped around. But we're redoing every department, making them all better.
We transformed our entire main floor, dedicating it to serve and celebrate women of all ages...
573: Tell us about the new updates and expansions to the Women's department.
We've always had a great women's department, but now we’re branching out and getting some newer merchandise for younger women. We're now carrying some top name brand jeans. And we're stocking tops, dresses, jewelry and handbags with a more youthful appeal. We are keeping the older ladies items also, but we’re going to go in with some younger girl stuff as well. We transformed our entire main floor, dedicating it to serve and celebrate women of all ages with more boutique style items. Clothing, gifts, floral, home decor, sewing and so much more! Since Covid is over I think people are wanting to go back out to touch and deal and shop again because we’ve been busier than ever.

Established in 1997, Quality Jewelry Buy Weight is dedicated to saving you money and delivering products that are limited only by your own imagination. Imagine what mom will say when she opens up that one of a kind mother's ring or a dazzling custom pair of earrings that look costly, but were surprisingly affordable. Quality Jewelry Buy Weight has a very simple business model designed to save your hard earned dollars. Low overhead=low prices. We traveled down to Downtown Cape Girardeau to get more information from owner, and Cape Girardeau native, Trace Allen.
I went to the jewelry district, and it was amazing!
573: Tell us what inspired you to sell jewelry by weight.
So the first thing I did when I traveled to Europe for the first time was not go to see the Colosseum or any other tourist locale. No, I went to the jewelry district, and it was amazing! They had thousands of items with no pricing and I said, "That’s very odd, how do you know how much it is?" The man said, "Very easy. We just put it on the scale and weigh it, then we tell you the prices, so you don't overpay." And a lightbulb popped on. I came home and I started a franchise. I had one and eventually turned it into 12. They were little boutiques that we would sell gold and then I would do the custom work out of my home, and that’s how this all began 40 years ago.
573: Tell us about your custom design process.
CAD-cam is our forte, which is computer aided design. We can take multiple pictures, multiple aspects of any item, rings, necklaces, earrings, whatever. We scan them into our computer and create a 3-D master file. From that master file we plug it into a 3-D printer and we grow it. After we grow it we get final approval from our customer then we cast it, set it, and finish it. We can do all of that fun custom stuff for less than you would pay for a mass produced piece. If you can be a part of it, it costs less, and it’s a one of a kind piece, then be a part of it!
